The Last Jar of Bramble Jam

WEATHERFIELD LANE, SHROPSHIRE · OCTOBER 1961

Every October, without fail, Nora Briggs made bramble jam. She'd done it since she was twelve years old, standing at her mother's elbow in a kitchen that smelled of sugar and woodsmoke, watching the purple bubbles rise and fall in the pan.

This October, she had exactly enough brambles for one last jar. She'd counted them herself, tipped them into the colander one by one, and decided that one jar was plenty. A jar like that could last the whole winter if you were careful. If you saved it for the right moment.

The right moment, she had always believed, was the one you almost didn't notice until it had already passed.
